A Long Weekend and The First Day of Pre-K
Long weekends spoil me. It is amazing how much more relaxing and productive a weekend can be when you know you have that extra day. I'm glad we did the weekend the way we did. We were refreshed and ready to go on this Tuesday morning--and what a special Tuesday morning it is!
Friday was such a gorgeous day, perfect for a Newton Eagles Football game! Kids got dressed in their finest orange and blue and I tried for the perfect picture.....
and this is what I got ha! Kind of sums up life around here. Happy and on the go!
Emery loved the game. She sat with us but then made it down to Nana, D and Hannah. She didn't take her eyes off of the cheerleaders....well until the band started playing. Then she clapped off beat and waved her arms around like the flag girls, totally caught up in the moment. I didn't blame her, the band looked and sounded so good! August surprised us. We got their about ten minutes before kickoff and he was already hard to handle. He did the whole push-squirm-squeal thing which makes him impossible to hold. Doug and I just kind of looked at each other and were prepared to get up and leave right then. Nana grabbed him and he actually sat and watched the first quarter. He loved the cheering and watched the game. After that it was a lot of me walking around with him and snacks...but we made it the whole game! So a win for the Eagles and us!
Saturday was pretty laid back. We ran to Aldi together and made sure the kids got good naps. In the afternoon we headed to the Farm. Auggie and I stayed and chatted with Grandma Susie, Em went to play at Nora's house and Doug helped chop. The whole Jansen crew congregated at Tim and Karen's for a weenie roast that evening. I snapped this picture of Emery and Katie during the one time they sat still. These two are quite the pair and I love it.
Aunt Cheryl was going for a quick ride in the tractor and asked if she could take Auggie along....he and I had bonded enough for the day and he really needed a nap, so I of course said sure! Take him! Rumor has it he lasted all of 30 seconds before falling asleep. We joked that they should have kept driving! The kids were sweaty and filthy when we got home which means they had a great night (it also called for baths first thing Sunday morning.)
Sunday afternoon we took a quick girls trip to Tuscola to do a little fall clothes shopping. Em got a few outfits for school but she didn't need much.
August stayed home and played ball with Daddy. He was the real reason we went shopping though. Last week when it was cool a few mornings, I realized the boy had one pair of jeans to his name and one hand-me-down sweat shirt. We were not prepared for fall weather at all! Now I say bring on the long sleeves and pants!
We cut our shopping trip pretty short because Sharon and Aunt Kaci's family were coming over for supper. Taco Night! I had my house spotless and all picked up before they came...or so I thought. Whatever I picked up Auggie was close behind getting back out. Never look in any closets, cabinets or drawers when you come to my house, we play the "shove things wherever as long as they are out of the way" game at our house. I didn't take any pictures of the night. Too busy enjoying my company.
I promise this is Auggie smiling. Smiling because he had one extra day home with his Momma! On Monday Doug and I cleaned out our closets and did what felt like a million loads of laundry. Yay productivity!
Em spent the day playing with sparkle play-doh, watching a movie and doing her first homework assignment. She also flipped through and circled her favorite books in her first book order. When I was little nothing made me happier than a book order. I would look through and read about all the books until I could narrow it down to the perfect book for me. I remember sitting at the supper table showing my Mom my picks....I swear she loved them as much as I did. Doug's book order memory is a little different than mine. He said he always just flipped to the back and wanted the toy or game or magic trick book that cost the most money. Clearly we think with different sides of our brain. With Em not exactly knowing what they are yet, it was clear that I was the most excited about the book order this time around. Hoping my love of reading rubs off on her. I guess liking math like Daddy wouldn't be the end of the world either....
We finished the day with another grocery run and instead of cooking supper everybody got to pick a snack from the store. Emery decided on little Mac'n'cheeses for her and Aug and as a family we picked ice cream for dessert. So nutritious...right? I let the kids handle their own cones...it was bath night so the mess was easy to pick up! Maybe ice cream for supper will be our "night before school" ritual.
When Em went to bed Monday night she told us she was going to dream about "stool." She knows her teachers name and gave Doug and I the run down of the morning schedule. My girl is getting too big.
I rode with them for the first day. No way I was going to miss the first drop off! Her teacher came and got her from the car and I don't think she even looked back at Doug and I once she saw her. She immediately started talking and all I heard was "I left me Aug...." I am wondering if she was telling her that she left Auggie at Miss Sharon's (thats all she seemed worried about this morning-Auggie being without her.) Not going to lie, I cried big mommy tears and Doug just patted my leg and asked me if I was okay. I am over the moon excited for her but just can't believe my baby is so big. I know she is going to love it. I just wish I could be a fly on the wall and see what she is like. Quiet and shy? Or giggly and sweet? Probably the perfect combination.
Doug said she was all smiles when he picked her up and she had a lot to say. They went to the big bathroom and played lots. She played with the "shopping thingy with the money in it" aka cash register and snacked on animal cookies, pretzels and apple juice. They sat on the circle rug but someone sat on her "E" and she only talked to Beckett. She only played with Beckett. She only sat by Beckett. She is only going to be friends with Beckett. (Beckett happens to go to Miss Sharon's and is a new friend.) Doug said he tried to explain that she needed to be friends with everyone and she said she would when she "got big."
I am so happy she loved it.
